by Computer PC Packages

The terminology BIOS stands for Basic Input/output System, Basic Integrated Operating System and sometimes Built In Operating System. The main purpose of the BIOS is to make the computer fully prepared so that the machine can download various software programs. It also helps manipulating the computer. This process is termed as booting or bootstrapping. The main job of the BIOS is to recognize the hardware of the computer. BIOS can be called a sort of coded program hidden on a chip that plays a major role in identifying and manipulating different devices that make x86 pc.

There are other technical terminologies such as boot monitor, boot loader or boot ROM which are also utilized. There are some specific computers like Macintosh PowerPC computers with the inclusion of Sun computers depend on Open Firmware for the same reason. There is the availability of other substitutes for Legacy BIOS on the x86 world. OLPCXO-1 is loaded with Extensible Firmware Interface and Open Firmware with the inclusion of Linux BIOS. The terminology was first seen in the CP/M operating system. It explains the portion of CP/M. It is also seen that there are many types of DOS which are designed with a file called IBMBIO.COM or IO.SYS.

The BIOS is operated from the source of PROM, EPROM and flash memory after the computer being switched on . It manipulates or sets in condition the motherboard parts and peripherals such as the clock generator, the chipset, the system memory, the processors and caches, mass storage controller like SATA and IDE controllers. It also covers different I/O controllers like USB and mouse or keyboard. Last but not the least, it is seen that old model computer operating systems which were upgraded for 16bit CPUs like MS-DOS, depended on the BIOS to execute most input/output tasks inside the personal computer.
